Nelson Dilipkumar (popularly known as Nelson) was born on Thursday, 21 June 1984 (age 39 years; as of 2023) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. His zodiac sign is Cancer. After completing his schooling, he decided to pursue graduation in medicine or engineering; However, his father set a condition that he had to do engineering from a good college or study visual communication. Since he had scored only 80% marks in his 12th class examination, he decided to pursue graduation in Visual Communication at The New College, Chennai. After completing his graduation, he pursued a career in the Tamil entertainment industry.

He made his debut as a film director and writer in 2018 with the Tamil film Kolamavu Kokila, starring Nayanthara in the lead role. He got this film with the help of his friend and musician Anirudh Ravichander. He later wrote and directed several hit Tamil films including Doctor in 2021 starring Sivakarthikeyan and Priyanka Arul Mohan, Beast in 2022 starring Vijay and Pooja Hegde, and Jailer in 2023 starring Rajinikanth and Sunil Shetty. There was speculation in May 2023 that after Jailer, he will make a film with Dhanush in the lead role.
