Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani was a terrorist-turned-soldier who was killed in an anti-terrorist operation in Batagund in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. Let’s take a closer look at the life of the first Kashmiri soldier to be awarded the Ashoka Chakra.
Biography/Wiki
Nazir Wani was born in 1980 (age 38 years at the time of death) in Cheki Ashmuji village of Kulgam tehsil in Kashmir. He was part of a militant organization. After surrendering before the Army, Nazir got involved in anti-terrorism programs to eliminate terrorism from the Kashmir Valley. Wani was an Ikhwan before joining the army. Ikhwan refers to the group of militants who surrendered after realizing the evil intentions of evil forces.
Nazir Wani joined the Indian Army in 2004.
Family, Wife and Children
Nazir Wani was born in a Kashmiri Muslim family. He had three younger brothers.
Nazir Wani was married to Mehjabeen, a teacher.
Nazir Wani is survived by his wife and two sons – Athar Nazir (20 years) and Shahid Nazir (18 years).

Nazir Ahmed Wani was part of a militant organization. However, he surrendered before the army and became a part of anti-terrorist operations to eliminate terrorism in Kashmir. As an Ikhwan, he provided essential information to the army regarding the militants. Wani was recruited into the 162 battalion of the Territorial Army in 2004 as a result of his contributions. 162 Battalion of the Territorial Army is a unit of the Rashtriya Rifles primarily involved in fighting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. He fought terrorism responsibly in Kulgam and Shopian districts of Kashmir Valley.
Wani was part of Operation Augam. It was Nazir Wani who, on 7 January 2007, informed the Army about the presence of four terrorists of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) organization and helped in getting rid of the HM terrorists.
On 14 November 2017, he joined Operation Wattengu, which was conducted in Kund area of Kulgam. With the necessary information from Wani about the HM and the exact location of the Lashkar terrorists, the Army was able to get rid of the terrorists. Wani was responsible for eliminating an HM terrorist and had captured a Lashkar and an HM terrorist.
His acts of bravery were praised in the valley.
Death
On 25 November 2018, Nazir Ahmed Wani was martyred in an encounter in Hirapur village near Batagund in Shopian district of South Kashmir, in which six terrorists of Hizbul and Lashkar terrorist organizations were eliminated. According to reports, Nazir Wani was also involved in the fight with the terrorists and was injured. He was taken to 92 Base Hospital, where he died.
Nazir Wani’s body was wrapped in the tricolor. When his mortal remains were lowered to the ground, he was honored with a 21-gun salute at 15 Corps Headquarters in Badami Bagh Cantonment.
