Encounter of UP don Ramesh Kalia

Introduction

Ramesh Kalia was a notorious Lucknow-based racketeer who extorted large sums of money from contractors and builders mainly from Uttar Pradesh. In 2004, when Samajwadi Party was in power in UP, the biggest challenge before CM Mulayam Singh Yadav was to curb the rising level of crime in the state. Especially, in its capital Lucknow, which was in the grip of a crime wave at that time. Many criminals, including Ramesh Kalia (once one of the most feared mafias in the state) have become a headache for the UP government. Kalia’s terror among the general public was so great that no one dared to testify against him. In September 2004, Kalia was allegedly involved in the murder of Samajwadi Party MLC Ajit Singh at his birthday party. The news shocked the state, with questions raised over the government’s standards to protect its citizens. This was the time when IPS officer Navneet Sekera, who by that time had led the encounter of more than 40 criminals, was called from Muzaffarnagar to Lucknow to control the rising graph of criminal activities.
