Gender & Sexual Orienatation

Namita, after hitting adolescence, wanted to transform into a woman; however, her parents were against her decision. At the age of thirteen, she underwent her first surgery for removing extra breast fat. In an interview, she said,

During my 10th class, I had some physical changes in me. My breasts started growing bigger. As my uncle was a doctor, my parents asked him to surgically removed my breasts. Within 3 months, my breasts started growing again.”

Later, when she turned 16, she was sent to a mental rehabilitation centre for six months. After spending six months in a rehabilitation centre, she was taken home to check for any changes but her feminine behaviour became more noticeable. She was then, at the age of seventeen, sent to a different rehabilitation centre for drug addicts. A year later, she was sent to another rehabilitation, which offered her to change her identity; however, Namita managed to run away from the rehabilitation centre. Thereafter, in 2010, she raised a complaint against her parents in the Madras High Court, where the court ruled a legal separation from her parents. In an interview, she described her transformational journey and said,

With the help of SAHODARAN (a non-profitable LGBTQ organization), my parents got counselling and were educated about the existence of transgender people in the society, which convinced my father to accept me, so eventually my parents changed their mind. After three months of separation, I decided to transition into a woman and live as a woman full time. I could afford it thanks to my job and my friends because I was working for SAHODARAN, and I also used to dance on stage, which gave me a smaller income. This money helped me to transition into a female at a very young age. After my transition, my parents didn’t accept me for like two months but again after having a conversation with SAHODARAN, my parents accepted me as a woman.”
