Sombir Singh (1982–2019) was a soldier in the Indian Army who was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest gallantry medal during peacetime, for his role in combating terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. He died after being shot during an anti-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. In January 2024, it was announced that actor Barun Sobti would play the role of Sombir Singh in the second season of the series Rakshak – India’s Braves.

Sombir Singh Kadyan was born on Thursday, 4 February 1982 (age 37 years at the time of death) in Mithi village, Siwani tehsil, Bhiwani district, Haryana, India. Their zodiac sign is Aquarius. Sombir completed his schooling from a government school in his village after which he was selected as a recruit in the Indian Army. He later reported to the Jat Regimental Center (JRC) in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, where he underwent military training until 2001.

Sombir Singh Kadyan joined the 8th Battalion of the Jat Regiment as a constable after completing his military training in Bareilly in 2001. Due to his leadership qualities, he became Naib Subedar, also known as Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO). In the same battalion. After becoming Naib Subedar, Kadyan was posted to Jammu and Kashmir, where he became part of 34 Rashtriya Rifles battalion and helped the battalion in stopping terrorism in Kulgam. With his battalion he conducted several anti-terrorist operations in Kashmir.

On 24 February 2019, Sombir’s battalion received information about the presence of three heavily armed terrorists in Turigam village, Kulgam. Soon after, the battalion sent Sombir along with some other soldiers to kill the militants. Sombir was part of the attack team that was ordered to kill the terrorists. While conducting a combat and search operation in the village, the militants started firing on the attacking team. Sombir directed the troops under his command and responded effectively to the terrorists. According to sources, they laid ambushes at several places in the village to prevent the militants from escaping; However, a terrorist fired at the soldiers resulting in serious injury to Sombir’s fellow soldier. To save his fellow soldier from being killed, Sombir left his safety, opened fire on the terrorist and managed to kill him. It was later determined that the killed terrorist was of foreign origin and belonged to A++ category. During this, Sombir was hit by two bullets due to which he died.

Death
Sombir Singh died on 24 February 2019 at the age of 37 due to two gunshot wounds, one in the neck and the other in the chest, during a counter-insurgency operation in Jammu and Kashmir. After being seriously injured in Kulgam, he was taken to 92 Base Hospital in Badami Bagh Cantonment, Srinagar, where he died. Talking about his death in an interview, his daughter Priya said,
It is a proud moment for our family that my martyr father has been awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously for showing courage while fighting the terrorists. Today I can proudly say that I am the daughter of a martyred soldier. It is very difficult to live life without a father, but he went beyond his duty as a father and sacrificed his life for the country. I want to say that the government should take care of the families of martyrs from time to time.”
Facts/General Knowledge
- After the demise of Sombir Singh Kadyan in 2019, the Haryana government gave an ex-gratia check of Rs 1 to the bereaved family members. Rs 2 lakh and announced that his wife Suman Devi would be given a government job on the basis of her educational qualifications.
- In January 2024, it was revealed that Barun Sobti would play the character of Naib Subedar Sombir Singh Kadyan in Rakshak – India’s Braves Chapter 2. While giving an interview, Barun talked about this and said,
