- On 1 January 2020, Munawwar was arrested along with four other comedians for allegedly making vulgar remarks against Hindu deities and mocking Union Home Minister Amit Shah during their show in Indore. The complaint was filed by Eklavya Singh Gaur, head of Hindutva group Hind Rakshak Sangathan and son of local BJP MLA Malini Singh Gaur. Talking to journalists, Gaur said,
When I heard about Munavvar’s show, I bought a ticket and went to watch it. As expected, he was insulting Hindu deities and also mocked Home Minister Amit Shah by dragging his name with the Godhra riots. Such objectionable things were going on during the comedy show. We made a video of them and closed the show by taking the audience out of the cafe. Then we caught the comedian and organizers of the show and took them to Tukoganj police station.
After a few days, a video of the altercation between Gaur and Munawwar went viral in which Gaur was seen accusing Munawwar of hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus by making jokes on Hindu deities, while Munawwar was trying to calmly explain that Nothing like that is happening. Later, Inspector Kamlesh Sharma of Tukaganj police station told The Indian Express that there was no video evidence to prove the charges against him of insulting Hindu deities and Union Minister Amit Shah. Several leading comedians, including Varun Grover, Vir Das and Rohan Joshi, came out in support of Munawwar and criticized his arrest.
You can’t stop the jokes and laughter. Not because comedians are presenting it, but because people have to laugh. The more you try, the more you will be mocked now and in history.
Anyone who has ever tried to control humor now has a category dedicated to jokes.
