David Blatt is a former professional basketball player and coach who currently works as a basketball director. He attended Princeton University from 1977 to 1981 before going to play professionally in Israel for nine of the next twelve years. David Blatt was born on May 22, 1959 in Kentucky, but grew up in Framingham, Massachusetts. William F. Blatt, the inventor who died in 2014, and Lillian (Siegal) Blatt, who died in 1997, were his parents. He was raised with four brothers and sisters. His ethnicity as an American citizen is American Caucasian. He is a Christian, but until his Bar Mitzvah he attended the Reform Temple and Hebrew school twice a week.
Blatt was recruited by a coach for an Israeli kibbutz team to play basketball in Israel during the summer during his sophomore year at Princeton, which turned out to be a life-changing experience. In 1981, he graduated from Princeton with a degree in English literature, where he wrote his final thesis on Bernard Malamud, author of The Natural. Blatt later moved to Israel and joined the Israel Defense Forces at the Schneller military base. He married Kineret, a former Israeli professional basketball player whom he coached, in 1991. They have four children, one of whom, Tamir Blatt, played basketball for several Israeli teams. Blatt was chosen to light the torch at the Mount Herzl Beacon Lighting Ceremony in 2023, in honor of Israel’s 75th anniversary.
