Mohammad Zubair is an Indian journalist and co-founder of an Indian non-profit fact-checking website called Alt News. He came into limelight on 27 June 2022 when he was arrested by Delhi Police for hurting religious sentiments through one of his tweets posted in 2018.

Zubair has worked as a software engineer with telecom giant Nokia for more than 10 years. In 2017, Mohammad Zubair and former software engineer Pratik Sinha founded the Alt News website to tackle the phenomenon of fake news. For about a year, Zubair simply assisted Sinha in running the site and continued working for Nokia in the meantime. He eventually left his job at Nokia in September 2018 and joined Alt News as a full-time employee. On 16 December 2019, he became the director of the Pravda Media Foundation, which runs Alt News.

Case registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act

In August 2020, Delhi Police registered a POCSO case against Zubair based on a complaint filed by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairman Priyank Kanungo. Two FIRs were registered against him in Delhi and Raipur. On August 6, while replying to an insulting message from a Twitter user named Jagdish Singh, Zubair used Singh’s display photograph with that of a little girl, who was probably Singh’s granddaughter. Zubair blurred his face in the posted picture and tweeted,

NCPCR demanded action against Zubair for “stalking a minor girl on Twitter”. However, the Delhi High Court granted interim protection from arrest to Zubair in September 2020. In October 2020, the Chhattisgarh High Court also passed a similar order.

According to the FIR, devotee @balajikijain tweeted, “Associating our Lord Hanuman ji with Honey Moon is a direct insult to Hindus as he is a celibate. According to Sirsa, most of Zubair’s tweets were from “Pakistani accounts”, targeting Arshdeep Singh and the Sikh community.

Case registered to reveal identity of a child victim

On 28 August 2023, Uttar Pradesh Police filed an FIR against Mohammed Zubair at Mansoorpur police station for allegedly revealing the identity of a seven-year-old Muslim boy who was slapped by his classmates on the instructions of a teacher named Tripta Tyagi. Zubair was booked under Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice Act on the complaint of a person named Vishnudutt. In an interview, Zubair talked about this and said that he was the only person who was pointed out, despite the fact that the video was shared by many others, including online media outlets.
