Biography/Wiki
MK Alagiri was born as Muthuvel Karunanidhi Alagiri on 30 January 1951 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was born to politician M. Karunanidhi and his wife Dayalu Ammal. He was named after the Tamil writer Azhagirisamy, whom his father was highly influenced by and even considered him his idol. He entered politics from a very young age under the tutelage of his father. He had to face a lot of difficulties and controversies in his political career.
Family, Caste and Wife
He was born in a family of politicians from the Christian Vellalar community. His father M. Karunanidhi was the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and mother Dayalu Ammal was a businesswoman.
He has three brothers, MK Muthu – an actor, singer and politician; Grew up with; MK Stalin – a politician; and MK Tamilarasu – a film producer. He also has two sisters, Selvi Geetha Kovalam and Kanimozhi – a politician.
He did not have good relations with his father as he always felt that Karunanidhi always favored his younger son MK Stalin. On 10 December 1972, he married Kanthi Alagiri. They have a son, Dayanidhi Azhagiri, and two daughters, Kayalvizhi and Anjugaselvi.

Alagiri completed his education from Presidency College. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from college in his hometown, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He is a famous politician and eminent social worker. He entered politics at a very young age. He joined his father’s political party, DMK, and became an important leader in the party.
In 1989, he held no official position but had complete control in the Madurai region. In 2008, he led his party to victory in three by-elections. He was then made the party’s organizing secretary for the southern districts. In the 2009 general elections, he won from Madurai Lok Sabha constituency and became a cabinet minister. He was the Cabinet Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers. However, on January 24, 2014, he was removed from the post of member and secretary of the DMK party.
controversies
- On 20 May 2003, he was charged in the murder case of former DMK minister T. Kiruttinan. Due to internal discord between the two, they were arrested on charges of conspiring to murder. In May 2008, he was acquitted by the Principal District and Sessions Court.
- During his tenure as Cabinet Minister for Chemicals and Industries, the opposition raised questions on his presence in Parliament as Jena, the minister of state in the ministry, answered all the questions raised in Parliament on Alagiri’s behalf.
- In May 2007, the newspaper Dinakaran published the results of opinion polls, which showed that MK Stalin received 70% approval, while Alagiri received only 2%. This created a further rift in the already ongoing feud between the two brothers. This caused a lot of anger and Alagiri’s supporters attacked the Madurai office of Dhinakaran newspaper and set it on fire.
- In 2011, it was alleged that his wife purchased lands for ₹85 lakh, which are actually worth ₹20 crore. However, in September 2011, his wife was acquitted of all charges.
- In January 2013, Jena accused Alagiri of inaction in alleged misuse of government subsidies by fertilizer companies. Jena said Alagiri did not respond to any of the five letters written to her.
- In 2013, he got into another controversy when he did not accompany the contingent led by TR Baalu to the Prime Minister’s Office on 20 March 2013 to resign and submit his letter of withdrawal to the President. It was claimed that he delayed his decision. He resigned in protest against his father’s decision to step down from the Union ministry and some sources also claimed that he was upset that he had to wait for the decision to be taken.
