Mithun was born Gaurang Chakraborty on 16 June 1950 in a Hindu-Bengali family in Barisal, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Currently, he lives in Ooty, Tamil Nadu with his family. He had most of his schooling in Kolkata and completed his graduation in chemistry From Scottish Church College, Kolkata. After completing his degree he joined At the Indian Film and Television Institute, Pune, India. Very few people knew that before entering the film industry, he was a Naxalite and was a friend of popular Naxalite Ravi Ranjan during the mid-1970s. Due to some incidents at home he was forced to leave the Naxal movement and started pursuing a career in the film industry.
