Michael Preminger always tries to make jokes. The seasoned stand-up comedian, who has spent decades performing at some of the country’s most celebrated venues, brings that quality to Los Angeles Jewish Health as a dedicated volunteer ( LAJH).

Michael noted, “The Los Angeles Jewish Health standards are exciting and really fun to be part of.” “When I first started helping, I asked a woman named Edna, aged 104, if she would ever consider dating younger guys. Are there other types? she asked without skipping a beat as she turned to me.”

Michael has been returning to LAJHealth as a volunteer for over ten years because of the friendship and laughter that reigns there. His numerous television appearances on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dinah Shore Show and other shows show his career satisfaction with his career accomplishments. Although he co-wrote the popular and financially successful film Nothing in common with Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason, the weekly trips to LAJHealth bring him great personal satisfaction.

I can still hear Rita, the woman, say in Yiddish “Vos geven iz geven”, which means “What was, is”. It basically confirms that we can’t go back in time and can only look ahead, which I think is a pretty meaningful way to see the world,” Michael stated.

Listening to residents’ stories is one of his favorite things about working at LAJHealth. He yelled, “Someone told me she went dancing with the Dodgers when they were still in Brooklyn. These people have achieved such great things, and after hearing their stories, I feel like I have traveled the world with them, from Brooklyn to Buenos Aires.

Michael is a native New Yorker who moved to Los Angeles in 1975 to pursue his love of show business after being born in the Bronx. As he rose through the ranks of popular comics, he raised a son and a daughter. His touring days have slowed as a grandpa, allowing him to focus on other activities like supporting Jewish Health in Los Angeles.
