Regarding his career, Mike began coaching as the defensive coordinator at Forbush High School in East Bend, North Carolina. He transferred to Asheville’s T.C. Roberson High School for the same position. He became head coach after five years as an assistant.
He was named Asheville Citizen-Times Area Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2004. In 2004, his team went undefeated, reached the state semifinals, and won the school’s first conference title. Mike was North Carolina’s assistant coach in the 2005 Shrine Bowl, which they won.
In 2006, Mike became Brevard’s defensive coordinator and assistant head coach in their first football season in 56 years. Tornadoes won two games with an all-freshman roster.
Lenoir-defensive Rhyne’s coordinator is Mike. In his final season as defensive coordinator, the Bears led the SAC in total defense and ran the defense. He became a coach in 2011.
First-year Bears coach Mike McCarthy won Mike Coach of the Year. The next season, he led the Bears to the Division II playoffs and won their first tournament since 1962. He was named Coach of the Year again.
