Early coaching career

Mike began his coaching career as a defensive coordinator at Forbush High School in East Bend, North Carolina. He transferred to TC Roberson High School in Asheville, North Carolina, for the same position. After five seasons, he ascended to the position of head coach.

As head coach, he compiled a 42-18 record, along with a 5-4 playoff record, and earned Asheville Citizen-Times Area Coach of the Year awards in 2002 and 2004. His team finished undefeated the regular season, reaching the state semifinals and winning the first conference championship in school history in 2004.

Mike also served as an assistant coach for the North Carolina team in the 2005 Shrine Bowl, helping them beat the South Carolina team.

Brevard

In 2006, Mike transitioned to the college ranks, working as defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Brevard in his first football season in 56 years. The Tornados won two games while starting a roster entirely made up of true freshmen.

Lenoir-Rhyné

Mike became Lenoir-Rhyne’s defensive coordinator in 2007. In his final season as defensive coordinator, the Bears’ defense led the South Atlantic Conference in total defense and was fourth nationally in rushing defense. He was named head coach in the 2011 season.

In his first season, the Bears went 7-3 and earned Mike Coach of the Year honors. The following season, he led the Bears to the Division II playoffs and they won the tournaments starting in 1962 and again earned the Coach of the Year award.

In January 2014, Mike was hired as the 24th head coach at The Citadel. He led the 2015 Bulldogs to their first conference championship since 1992 after a 5-7 inaugural season. For his efforts, Mike also received the Southern Conference Coach of the Year award.

James Madison

On January 18, 2016, Mike became the head coach of the Dukes football program. He led them to two national title game appearances and three NCS playoff appearances. In 2016, Mike coached the Dukes to a 14-1 record and the 2016 NCAA Division I FCS Football Championship defeating No. 13 Youngstown State.

In 2017, he led JMU to a 14-1 record and led them to the national title game where the Dukes suffered their only loss of the season when they were defeated by North Dakota State 17-13.
