death/murder
On July 24, 2022, Meninder Dhaliwal, along with his friend Satinder Gill, who was not part of the Brothers Keepers gang, were shot dead near the Sundial Hotel in the popular Canadian ski town Whistler Village. Maninder died on the spot, while his friend Satinder died in a local hospital. According to some sources, both were shot several times. Speaking to the media, Scott Cargo, an employee of a nearby bicycle store, said he was standing outside the store when he heard the gunshots. He added,
It was like 10 shots, rapid fire. “I’ve lived in Kelowna for 30 years, I’ve heard gunshots before.”
Elaborating further about the incident he said,
Then this 10-year-old kid comes running near our store and says, ‘There are some people shooting over there’ and he keeps running. I said, ‘You can come in.’ But he kept going.”
Later, a burning vehicle was found in the 3300-block of Ptarmigan Place, which was being linked to the murders. Hours after the incident, a horrifying video of Meninder and his friend lying in a pool of blood started circulating on social media. In addition to the video, some photos of a vehicle being pulled over by police near Squamish also circulated on the internet. Police said the killings were linked to an ongoing gang conflict in the Lower Mainland. Talking about this during a conversation with the media, an investigating police officer said,
As a result of the dynamic response of officers and rapid evidence collection, Sea-to-Sky RCMP were able to locate and apprehend several individuals. Although this was a daytime shooting in a busy village, due to the quick response of Sea-to-Sky RCMP members, there is not believed to be any further risk to the public.
Speaking to the media about photos of the murder scene, Vancouver Police Chief Adam Palmer said,
The images we are releasing today represent those who pose a significant public safety risk here in the City of Vancouver.
