It wasn’t the experience she expected, Mel B once recalled the embarrassing moment she had with Prince William.
During his appearance in Lives with Kelly and Ryan In January 2023, the Spice Girls bandmate stated that the incident occurred while she was visiting Buckingham Palace in May 2022 to receive her Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
However, what was going to be a simple ceremony turned awkward very quickly. “I didn’t realize that the medal actually goes on your chest,” admitted Mel B. “And Victoria [Beckham] I designed my dress, mine and my mom’s for the occasion. And she made a big slit right there. I was like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry.'”
The singer also said that her dress had a slit in the neckline. She initially joked with Beckham about the design choice.
“I think she knew,” Mel B continued. “She did a number on me.”
Speaking about her time with the Prince, Mel B said she met the royal before the ceremony. “Then he said, ‘Oh, hey, how are you?’” she said. The singer also recalled meeting William and Prince Harry when they were younger.
“When we flew to Buckingham Palace, it was when the royals were very young. We had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, without the smash, which was a little fancy for me. So I decided: ‘Can we go to the kitchen and make some toast and jam?’ So we did that too.”

Ahead of her appearance on the daytime talk show, Mel B provided specific details about her and Prince William’s medal ceremony.
“I got my MB last year for my contribution and raising awareness about domestic violence,” she said. Entertainment tonight Rachel Smith. “[William] It was like, ‘So you’re here for the Spice Girls?’ while she sticks the medal in my chest.”
Mel B then told Prince William the key reason she was there. “I thought, ‘No, I’m a women’s supporter and I’m honored for all the work I’ve been doing with women’s support and speaking out about domestic abuse.’
The singer spoke of the prince’s interest in her work. “He was like, ‘Oh my God, really? So tell me more about it,’ and I said, ‘There’s a whole queue of people waiting to get their MBs, I don’t think this is the time to chat right now.’”
