Erik Karlsson’s wife, Melinda Karlsson, and Monika were acquaintances. Their spouses were colleagues and teammates on the Ottawa Senators. However, Melinda Karlsson filed a lawsuit against Monika in 2018 for alleged online violence. The Karlssons accused Monika of sending them offensive tweets and e-mails. In May 2018, they also submitted a request for Monika’s protection.
Melinda accused Monika of multiple remarks in which she expressed her desire for the death of her unborn child. She further said that Monika told her that she was dead and that her husband’s legs should be cut off to end his career. Mike and Monika disputed the allegations, claiming they had nothing to do with the harassment. Monika also thought gossip website Talk Sports played a role in Melissa’s decision to turn on her.
Monika later hired an IT expert, Kevin Horrocks, in the lawsuit to verify that the disparaging posts were not generated from her IP address. Horrocks’ analysis determined that the derogatory posts were not posted from Monica’s IP address. But the damage was already done. The club parted ways with Hoffman and Karlsson. After that event, the Karlsson family founded the “Can’t Dim My Light” foundation to raise donations and awareness against bullying.
