livelihood
When he was in 9th grade, he did his first rap battle. During his leisure time he used to practice rapping with his friends. Talking about his school days in an interview, Kode said,
I was going up against 12th class students and I was the first one to step out there with a stage name. At that time the scene was so small that I had to create warriors to fight because there was barely anyone in the scene or no scene at all. In the beginning, people didn’t take it seriously, but now I have a lot of messages saying they are proud of me.
He has participated in over eighty rap battles (as of 2021), and, soon, he became famous in the world of rap battles. Some of his popular rap songs are ‘Pareshaan’ (2020), ‘Raasta’ (2020), ‘Doob’ (2020), and ‘Kheecho’ (2021).
MC Codey is also the co-founder of Spit Dope Inc., a movement that fights to give underground hip hop wider access. While talking about his early days as a rap battler during an interview, he said,
There was a time when we were amateurs, wearing baggy clothes and battling on the streets. Anyone can post a status on the internet calling people to fight. So I was at this cipher in Hauz Khas and there I met Encore ABJ and this other rapper MC Snub who invited us for another cipher and then we thought if we are meeting like this every week, then it Why not do it under one name. That’s when we started Spit Dope and anyone could be a part of it. All this happened very suddenly. Also, it was so surreal that what started in Brooklyn was happening in the Indian context. I feel like it still hasn’t taken off properly because Spit Dope is not an entity, it’s a movement. It started with four boys fighting in parks and then we organized a show in Bombay where all the tickets were sold out.”
Apart from participating in rap battles, he has been judging and hosting rap battles across the country. In an interview, he shared how rap battles have evolved over the years. He said,
We have all worked very hard. In the initial years, it was easy for me as I earned a lot through college competitions. I would win competitions and invest that money in culture, in spit dope, to make it more efficient. I had a call center job when it probably wasn’t even legal for me to do it. Calum was working as a promoter at Hauz Khas, so we all had to struggle to make ends meet.

- In an interview he explained why he kept his stage name MC Code. He said,
I like to think that my codes are more ethical than those of the average entertainer. To me, they’re like survival instincts. I had done a lot of coding before, so I guess that’s where it came from, but it turned into this.”
