Larry Holmes was born in Cuthbert, Georgia. Larry Holmes was one of 12 children raised by his mother, Flossie, with his Gardner father, John Holmes. The family moved to Easton, Pennsylvania in 1954. The family relied on social assistance to survive.
When Larry Holmes was thirteen, he left school early to help his family. He was a quarry worker, a dump truck driver and a mechanic at a car wash.
