Matilda Cuomo was born in New York, United States, on September 16, 1931.  Mattia Raffa is her given name. Similarly, her elementary school teachers gave her the name ‘Matilda.’ Her parents were Mary Raffa and Carmelo “Charles” Raffa. They came to the United States from Sicily. Carmelo, her father, was a businessman. Her father and mother died in 1988 and 1995, respectively. She has three brothers, Frank, Sam, and Joseph, as well as a younger sister, Nancy. Matilda is also of Italian descent and of American nationality.
