Mathisha Pathirana was born on Wednesday, 18 December 2002 (age 20 years; as in 2022) in Kandy, Sri Lanka. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius.
His family has its roots in Harispathuwa, Sri Lanka. Mathisha Pathirana started playing cricket at home as a child. Talking about Pathirana’s passion for cricket in an interview, his father Anura said,
He would regularly wait for me to come home after work to play. He would give me a bat or a ball and ask me to play with him and I was more than happy to play with him.
Mathisha did his primary schooling at Ranabima Royal College, where he started playing cricket for the school’s cricket team. Pathirana was also inclined towards music from a young age and he took the music exam till class six. While studying in school, Mathisha also got involved in baseball, which helped him develop his bowling action. Initially, Pathirana played for his school team as both a batsman and a bowler. His school coach saw potential in him and asked his father to enroll him in a cricket academy. Once, while playing for his school’s cricket team, Mathisha got a chance to play for the Kandy district school team and attracted the attention of rural cricket fans. Soon, his father enrolled him at the Kettarama Fast Bowling Academy, where he was coached by Chamila Gamge and a few other cricket coaches. While he was training in Kettarama, Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan fast bowling coach Chaminda Vaas met Mathisha’s father and asked him to enroll Mathisha in a school in Colombo to hone his cricketing skills. However, his father did not like the idea of sending Mathisha away from his family in Colombo. However, he made several attempts to enroll in St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota but was unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Trinity College, Kandy invites Pathirana to join their school. He appeared for GCE OL and later joined the school. In school, he was a part of his school’s Under 17 cricket team.
Soon, he got the opportunity to represent the Sri Lanka Under-19 cricket team while he was still in school. Despite being involved in various domestic teams and playing in the international arena for the Sri Lanka national cricket team, Mathisha continued to represent his school (Trinity College) in various school-level cricket tournaments for a long time.
His family lives in Katugastota.

His father, Anura Pathirana, is a businessman. Anura played guitar for a music band in his youth. Mathisha’s mother was also a rhythm guitarist in the band ‘Salalihinio’. He has two elder sisters, Vishuka Pathirana and Tharindi Pathirana. Vishuka is an accomplished piano player and Tharindi is a guitarist. Vishuka Pathirana is married to Ryan Pathirana.

Mathisha Pathirana follows Buddhism. Talking about the religion of his family, Mathisha’s father said in an interview,
My son is a devoted Buddhist who attended Daham Pasal as a child. As a family we follow Sil and participate in most of the religious programs organized in our village temple. I believe that religion helps in developing the mind of a person. You may be Buddhist, Christian, Islamic or anything else, but if you follow the teachings of the leader of your religion it will help you face the journey of life,”

Mathisha Pathirana was included in SLC Grays’ squad for the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 League in August 2021. On 22 August 2021, he made his T20 debut for SLC Grays in the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 League.

In 2020, Mathisha was part of Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. On 19 January 2020, during a match between India and Sri Lanka at Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein, South Africa, Mathisha surprised the cricket world by bowling a 175 kmph (108 mph) delivery to Yashasvi Jaiswal that went wide in the fourth over of the Indian innings, making it the fastest ever bowled in international cricket at all levels. He surpassed Pakistan’s speed gun Shoaib Akhtar’s record of 161.3 km/h (100 mph), which he recorded during an ODI against England during the 2003 World Cup. However, it was later revealed that there was a technical glitch in the recording and it was not a ball clocked at 175 kmph. India won this match by 90 runs.
T-20
In May 2022, Pathirana was named in the Sri Lankan squad for Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 series against Australia. However, he was later ruled out of the series due to injury. In August 2022, Mathisha was named in Sri Lanka’s T20I squad for the 2022 Asia Cup. On 27 August 2022, he made his T20 International debut for Sri Lanka against Afghanistan at Dubai (DSC). In March 2023, Mathisha Pathirana was named in Sri Lanka’s T20 International squad for the T20I series against New Zealand.

Indian Premier League (IPL)
In April 2022, Chennai Super Kings signed him for the 2022 Indian Premier League for Rs. 2 million. He was included in the team as a replacement for New Zealand cricketer Adam Milne. On 15 May 2022, he made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings against Gujarat Titans. Opening the bowling in the eighth over of the match, Mathisha dismissed Shubman Gill with his first ball, becoming the first Sri Lankan player and ninth player in the world to achieve this feat in the Indian Premier League. In his second over of the match, Mathisha got the wicket of Hardik Pandya by tricking him with a slower ball. He bowled 3.1 overs in the match and gave away 24 runs.
He was retained by Chennai Super Kings at his base price of Rs. 20 lakhs for the Indian Premier League season 2023. In April 2023, during an IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, CSK captain MS Dhoni lost his temper at Mathisha Pathirana and stared at him after Pathirana blocked Dhoni’s direct-hit attempt at the stumps.
During the 2023 IPL, he became very popular for his bowling action and earned the title “Baby Malinga”.
