News about Mary Turner Pattiz

When KMET (now KTWV, 94.7 FM) rose to prominence in the 1970s, “The Burner” Mary Turner was one of radio’s early pioneers of progressive and rock albums. If you were a listener at the time, you might remember her. In many ways, she embodied what KMET was for her listeners: understanding, passion and humanity, on KMET’s airwaves from 1972 to 1982.

Turner passed away on May 9. Ace Young, Turner’s colleague at KMET, shared the news and recognition on social media.

Turner gave an interview to Don Barrett of LARadio.Com a few years ago in which she talked about her career and the early years of progressive rock radio. Who cares if you play whatever you want or say whatever you want? At the time, FM was considered ridiculous, especially for Top 40 fans. They were stars, while we were weirdos.

How has her career been affected by being a woman in a male-dominated field at the time? “I think women have helped more than anything else,” Turner told Barrett. I was in the right place at the right time because it was the right time.

Todd admits: “I’ve been letting my work take me almost 30 years.” I swore to my family that I wouldn’t let work weigh me down because I’ve seen too many friends and family do it before it’s too late. I don’t remember the last time I slept before 5 or 6 am

As the network’s chief political commentator, Todd will continue to work for NBC in his new position. NBC said it will focus on long-term coverage and continue to air “Chuck Toddcast” and “Meet the Press Reports.”

The email said Todd “will serve as the leading policy voice at NBC News, both in practice and during major events.”

She did short interviews and music news segments for KMET, which later evolved into nationally compiled Off the Record specials; These shows had an audience of about 25 million and are still highly regarded to this day. For her usual evening radio shift, she was one of the first to interview a teenager Bruce Springsteen.

She stayed with Off the Record after leaving KMET, did a day show for Armed Forces Radio, worked briefly for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and even participated in “Music in the Air”, an entertainment program used on the now defunct TWA Airlines. In 1993, she briefly returned to local airwaves on KLSX (now KNX-FM, 97.1).
