News Mark Meadows

Mark Meadows, Donald Trump’s former chief of staff, has appeared before a federal grand jury as part of special counsel Jack Smith’s ongoing investigation into the former president, according to a person familiar with the situation.

It is unclear whether Meadows testified as part of the special counsel’s investigation into whether Trump may have mishandled classified documents after leaving the White House, or as part of his investigation into the 2020 presidential election fraud attempt.

Without commenting on whether Meadows testified before a grand jury or in any other proceedings, Meadows’ attorney, George Terwilliger, said in a statement that Meadows “is obligated to tell the truth when he is legally obligated to do so.” A spokesman for the special counsel’s office declined to comment.

The grand jury hearing that Meadow attended was first reported by the New York Times. Meadows is said to be a key witness in Smith’s investigation. The judge dismissed Trump’s claim of executive privilege, forcing him to appear before a grand jury and release documents.

In early May, a source close to Trump’s legal team told CNN that the president’s lawyers had not spoken to Meadows and his staff and were unaware of their activities in the investigation.

According to multiple people familiar with Trump’s legal team at the time, Meadows’ silence annoyed the more outspoken attorneys of the other defendants. Specifically, they cite a $900,000 payment made by Trump’s political action organization Save America to law firm McGuireWoods late last year.

Although Meadows was limited to answering questions from the House Select Committee and the criminal investigation in Fulton County, Georgia, his testimony and records were aggressively searched during numerous investigations surrounding January 6 and the 2020 election.

Earlier this year, a member of the Atlanta grand jury revealed that Meadows testified but declined to answer questions, citing his Fifth Amendment privilege of self-incrimination and other privileges.
