In a recent interview, costume designer Nicoletta Ercole talked about how she convinced Marisa to undergo the drastic cut.

Nicoletta went on to remember that he convinced her to do it, only with the promise that he would make it the best hairdresser in the world at that time.

“Marisa, she’s not… she’s so beautiful but she’s not particularly beautiful, you know what I mean? Like everyone else. So I said, ‘Why don’t you cut your hair?’ And she said, ‘No! I don’t want to cut my hair!’ I said, ‘Okay, I know the best stylist in the world, Aldo Signoretti.’ He is in Rome. If you want, I can call him.’”

She did just that, telling him to take the first flight to Los Angeles: “I called him and said, ‘Go to an airport, take the first flight to Los Angeles. You have to come here to cut Marisa Tomei’s hair.’ She cut his hair in the small garden of my apartment.

Marisa’s pixie cut for the film revived the pixie cut trend, which was popular in the late 1960s and 1970s.
