After a few years of training with his father, he began working as his father’s laboratory assistant. In 1986 he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and began working as a licensed dentist with his father.

His wife Gretchen Whitmer is an American lawyer and politician. She is the 49th sitting governor of Michigan. She has held the position since 2019. She was chosen to deliver the Democratic response to Donald Trump in 2020. Whitmer is a progressive Democrat and can work with state legislators from different political perspectives.
