He lived in G wing of Geeta Akash Deep Building in Geeta Nagar. Phase 7, Mira Bhayandar Road, Mumbai for five years till 2020. Then, they moved to flat number 704 of J Wing in the same building.
After the news of Saraswati Vaidya’s murder went viral, it was alleged that they were in a relationship; However, Manoj Sane said during investigation that he never had physical relations with her and she was like a daughter to him. Apparently, he tutored her in maths as she was planning to appear for the Class 10 exams. Neighbors believed they were a married couple; However, no marriage certificate was found. The flat was taken on rent in the name of Manoj.
murder of saraswati vaidya
On the night of June 7, 2023, the police received a complaint from Manoj’s neighbors that a foul smell was coming from his flat. Neighbors had earlier complained to Manoj about the foul smell and he had said he would look into it and solve the problem. When the police reached the flat, they found pieces of Saraswati’s body in the bathroom. Reportedly, he murdered her on June 4, 2023. Upon interrogation, it was revealed that Manoj had cut her body into pieces before disposing of it.
Reportedly, he bought a tile cutter machine worth Rs 1000 and a 200-volt electric chainsaw worth Rs 4000, which he used to cut her body into pieces. To remove the foul smell, he cut her body into pieces in the bathroom and cooked it in a pressure cooker. Police recovered Saraswati’s legs and two more bags of cooked body parts from the flat. Manoj also bought 5 bottles of Nilgiri (Eucalyptus) oil to delay the decomposition of the dead body. Reportedly, when the police questioned Manoj about the foul smell, he did not panic and moved around the flat normally wearing a mask.
Police collected pieces of evidence from the flat and sent the body parts to JJ Hospital, Mumbai for forensic analysis. It was also suspected that Manoj had fed Saraswati’s body parts to stray dogs. The police also checked the septic tanks of the colony as it was suspected that Manoj had thrown away some body parts through the toilet as residents of the colony had complained about abnormally clogged drains. When he was trying to escape from the building, police caught him from the lift with the help of residents. The police registered FIR number 0306 at Nayanagar Police Station, Thane, under sections 302 and 201 of the IPC on June 8, 2023, and produced him in the court, which sent him to judicial custody till May 16, 2023.
suicide angle
During initial interrogation, Manoj Sane alleged that he lost his job on the ration ship on May 29, 2023, due to which there were frequent fights between them. He alleged that on the morning of June 3, 2023, 32-year-old Saraswati committed suicide by consuming poison and when he saw her body, he was afraid of being accused of murder and decided to dispose of the body.
Inspired by Shraddha Walker case
During initial investigation, Manoj told the police that he felt he was inspired by the Shraddha Walker case and thought that he could cut the body into pieces and dispose of it. There are some similarities between the Shraddha Walker murder and the Saraswati Vaidya murder as both the accused, Aftab Poonawala and Manoj Sane respectively, were captured on CCTV carrying sacks or bags, and both had cut the body into pieces; However, there were some key differences such as Walker having both names in the rental agreement; However, Sane rented the flat only in his name. Furthermore, Aftab threw the body in the forest; However, Manoj used to cook the dead body in a pressure cooker.
