Joy Koy is seeing the bright side of what many thought was a disastrous turn as host of Sunday night’s Golden Globes. Koy’s opening monologue in particular received a lackluster response from viewers on social media and from the celebrities in attendance. When asked about his performance at the Golden Globes, Koy, who reportedly only had 10 days to prepare for the hosting gig, was full of praise. Your rating of him for his performance? “A plus simply based on the courage (to do it),” she recently told the Los Angeles Times.

The Filipino comedian was proud to bring cultural representation to the Globes, which have faced criticism in the past for their lack of diversity. “I am the first Asian to be a solo host. “We are in 2024. I am the first 81 year old,” Koy said. “Imagine if someone said yes before me. “We would still be at the 82nd Golden Globes and there still wouldn’t be any Asians as solo hosts, so if he hadn’t said yes, there never would have been.”
Perhaps Jo Koy’s most scrutinized prank at the Golden Globes was the famous relationship between pop queen Taylor Swift and professional football player Travis Kelce. “As you know, we came after a double football game,” Koy said during her opening monologue. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL: At the Golden Globes, we get fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.”
Swift, who often attends Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs games, seemed unfazed by the joke. She sat stone-faced, sipping her drink.
However, Koy insists that the barb was not intended to offend the “Bad Blood” singer. “The only intention of that joke was to make fun of the NFL,” Koy explained. “The good thing about the Globes is that we don’t need to make cuts for ratings. What hurts me the most is that I support Taylor. I support her; I love her work. I have nieces that I bought tickets for. There is no bad intention in that joke.”
