Manjula Subramaniam (1948–2023) was a 1972 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Gujarat cadre. She is known for being the first woman Chief Secretary of Gujarat. On 1 January 2023, he died due to health issues in a hospital in Vadodara, Gujarat.

Dr. Manjula Subramaniam was born on Saturday, 18 September 1948 (age 74 years; as in 2022) in Tamil Nadu. Her zodiac sign is Virgo. His hometown is Gujarat. After receiving IAS training, Manjula was posted as Assistant Collector (Junior Scale) in Surat from 1 August 1974 to 1 June 1976. After this he worked as an Assistant Collector under the Secretary in the Land Revenue Management and District Administration Department for about six months. , On 1 January 1977, Manjula was appointed as District Development Officer in Jamnagar. From 1 January 1978 to 1 April 1980, Subramaniam served as the District Collector of Amreli. After this he served as the District Collector of Junagadh for about two years. On 1 May 1982, Manjula was appointed as Deputy Secretary, Department of Industries and Mines. On 1 April 1984, Manjula went on central deputation and served as Deputy Secretary, Personnel and Administrative Reforms. On 1 June 1986, he was appointed as Joint Chief Controller of Commerce Industries (Import and Export). Subsequently, Manujula served as the Director of Commerce Industry for about eight months. On 1 June 1989, Manjula became a member of the Department of Energy and Petrochemicals and the Gujarat Electricity Board. He served there until 1 May 1993. Subsequently, she went on central deputation for about 5 years and served as Joint Secretary to the Government of India. On 3 June 1998, Manjula was appointed as Principal Secretary, Department of Urban Development and Urban Housing. He also held the post of Principal Secretary, Department of Energy and Petrochemicals and Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Finance. As Principal Secretary, Energy and Petrochemicals, he worked for ‘Jyoti Gram Yojana’, an initiative of the Government of Gujarat, India, to ensure 24-hour, three-phase quality power supply in rural areas of the state. On 31 August 2007, he was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Gujarat; During that time PM Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Manjula retired from her services on 30 November 2008. After his retirement, Manjula was appointed as the Chief Vigilance Commissioner of Gujarat. She was also a part of the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation. He also served as chairman and director in several state public sector units. In June 2017, he was appointed as the interim chief of Gujarat Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), Gujarat.

In August 2020, Subramaniam was appointed as an additional director on the board of directors of Gujarat Gas Limited (GIPCL) for a tenure of five years. He resigned from the post in December 2022 on health grounds.
Death
Manjula Subramaniam died in a hospital in Vadodara, Gujarat on 1 January 2023 due to health complications. She had been facing health problems for some time and was admitted to the hospital a week before she passed away. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed grief over his demise on social media. PM Modi said in a tweet,
Saddened by the demise of experienced bureaucrat Dr. Manjula Subramaniam. He was widely respected for his understanding of policy-related issues and his action-oriented approach. I remember my conversation with him when I was the Chief Minister. Condolences to his family and friends. Calmness.”
