Mamukkoya (1946–2023) was an Indian actor who worked predominantly in Malayalam films. He appeared in over 450 Malayalam films, mainly in comic roles. He was the first person to receive the State Award for Best Comedian in Malayalam cinema. On 24 April 2023, he suffered a heart attack and died two days later due to brain hemorrhage.

Mamukkoya (also spelled Mamukkoya) aka Mamukka was born on Friday, 5 July 1946 (age 76 at death) in Pallikandi, Malabar District, Madras Presidency, British India (now Kozhikode, Kerala, India) . His zodiac sign is Cancer. In Kerala, he did his schooling from Elementary School in Pallikandy, GVHSS Kuttichirra Senior Secondary School in Kuttichirra and MM High School in Kozhikode. While he was studying in school, he performed in various stage plays. After completing his school, he started working in a timber yard in Kallayi. He worked in the lumber yard during the day and performed in stage plays and street plays at night. He also sold soil and moringa leaves and sticks. Later, he joined a cultural troupe called Sehgal Arts Productions.

Death
He died of a brain hemorrhage on 26 April 2023. Earlier, on 24 April 2023, when he was in Malappuram, Kerala to inaugurate a sevens football tournament in Vandoor, he suffered a heart attack. After this he was immediately taken to a private hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala. However, two days later his health began to deteriorate and he died of brain hemorrhage. On his demise, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan shared his grief through his Twitter account. He tweeted,
Mamukkoya has enthralled film lovers across Kerala for decades with his vibrant and unique on-screen performances. His sudden demise is a great loss to the industry, art world and the public sector of the state. Joining the grief of family, friends and the film industry.”
Facts/General Knowledge
- He loved playing football since his school days. Even in his old days, he used to play various football matches with his friends.
- In an interview he had told that he was born in a poor family. He didn’t even have shoes to wear on his wedding day. He had borrowed shoes from a friend for the wedding.
- He shared a good relationship with Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (writer), SK Pottekkat (writer) and MS Baburaj (music composer).
- During the phase after the Babri Masjid demolition, some Congress leaders asked him to campaign for one of their candidates for the local body elections in Wayanad, Kerala. He agreed to this and when he was invited on the stage to campaign for the Congress candidate, instead of supporting the candidate he urged people not to vote for the Congress because of the risk of demolishing the Babri Masjid. The decision was of his government. Congress leaders were surprised to see his answer. Mamukkoya had then said that he cannot lie to people and will do only what he feels is right. Reportedly after this incident no political party invited him to campaign for them.
- Mamukkoya supported various social campaigns. At various events he talked about unity and harmony among communities. He once questioned the concepts of Haram and Halal in Islam. He said that photography is considered haram in Islam, but it became halal when passport became mandatory to visit the holy place of Haj.
- In 2018, he made some Dubsmash videos which became very popular.
- His unique style of speaking Mappila Muslim language in films was liked by the audience.
- After his demise in 2023, an Indian sculptor named Unni Kanai shared that a few days before his demise, Mamukkoya had called Unni and asked him to create a large statue of Martyr Karinthandan of Wayanad. However, he died before his wish could be fulfilled.
