Mahesh Kumathalli is an Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who was elected as MLA from Athani during the 2019 Karnataka Legislative Assembly by-election. In 2018, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Athani as a member of the Indian National Congress (INC).

In 2013, he contested from Athani assembly seat on Congress ticket, but he lost the election to BJP candidate Laxman Sangappa Savadi. In 2018, he contested and won the Athani assembly seat as a Congress candidate, defeating BJP candidate Laxman Savadi by 2331 votes. Following the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections, HD Kumaraswamy of JD(S) was sworn in as Chief Minister with the support of Congress, BSP, KPJP and an independent MLA. As of July 2019, 13 Congress MLAs and 3 JD(S) MLAs resigned from the assembly, reducing the government to minority. Apart from this, 1 KPJP and 1 Independent MLA also withdrew their support from the government and extended their support to BJP. The rebel MLAs have left Bengaluru and camped in a resort in Mumbai. After this, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy moved a trust vote in the House, resulting in the fall of his government. Mahesh Kumathalli was one of the 15 MLAs who brought down the Kumaraswamy government by not supporting the trust vote and giving their allegiance to the BJP.

In July 2019, Karnataka Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar disqualified independent MLA R Shankar and two Congress-JD(S) MLAs Ramesh Jharkiholi and Mahesh Kumathalli. The Speaker announced that the MLAs have been disqualified as members of the 15th State Legislative Assembly under Para 2(1)(a) of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution and Article 191(a) of the Constitution of India. He will no longer be a member of the Assembly till his term ends on 23 May 2023. He was also prohibited from contesting the by-election. Subsequently, Kumathalli and Ramesh Kumar moved the Supreme Court against their expulsion from the Assembly under the anti-defection law, claiming that the Speaker’s decision was taken “in a hurry” at the behest of the Congress party. In November 2019, the SC confirmed the disqualification of 17 rebel MLAs from Karnataka, but set aside the Speaker’s decision to bar them from contesting elections till 2023. In December 2019, Kumathalli contested the Athani assembly seat as a BJP candidate in the by-election and won. , In 2023, he contested from Athani Assembly on BJP ticket, but he lost to Congress candidate Laxman Savadi by 76,122 votes.

Comment on flood affected people
In 2021, Mahesh Kumathalli courted controversy after a video of his candid conversation about flood-affected people went viral on social media. In a video clip, Kumathalli was seen asking a man to give him “quarters” in the flood-hit area of Athani taluk. In another video shot at a guest house, Kumathalli was seen expressing his “difficult situation”. He told his followers that he is busy with a lot of issues and he feels like throwing away his cell phone and sleeping peacefully as he is fed up of calls from flood affected people. As a result, Kumathalli received widespread criticism after which he issued an apology for his remarks. He said that at that time he had just recovered from Covid-19 and did not want to hurt anyone.

- In 2019, Pramod Hiremani, who is the Youth Congress President in Athani, filed a habeas corpus petition before the Karnataka High Court, alleging that Athani MLA Mahesh Kumathalli is missing and possibly in illegal detention. MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi was accused of illegally detaining Kumathalli. As a result, the High Court issued notice to the state government and Jarkiholi. Earlier, Hiremani had filed a police complaint in Athani, but he was told that Kumathalli would be in Bengaluru where the Assembly session was going on. Hiremani searched for the MLA in Bengaluru but failed to locate him; Therefore, he filed the petition. It was said that Mahesh had allegedly informed the petitioner that Ramesh was pressurizing him to resign from the post of MLA. At that time, Kumathalli was one of the Congress MLAs who was staying away from the Assembly session and was believed to be in touch with the BJP to switch allegiance. It is being speculated that the MLAs are in Mumbai on the orders of the BJP which is trying to woo them to destabilize the coalition government in Karnataka.
- While Kumathalli successfully toppled the coalition government in 2019, his native village, Telsang, and other villages in Athani taluk put up large boards on their outskirts to ban his entry. He was no longer welcome to campaign in the area as villagers accused him of selling his position for money. He claimed that Kumatalli chose to stay in Mumbai while his villages were flooded during the monsoon. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who campaigned in Telsang village ahead of the 2019 bypolls, accused Kumatalli of “selling himself” to the BJP for money “like a sheep, chicken or buffalo”.
