Mahesh Bhatt’s father Nanabhai Bhatt was an Indian film director and producer who worked in Hindi and Gujarati cinema. His father was a Hindu Nagar Brahmin. Mahesh’s mother Shirin Mohammad Ali was a Gujarati Shia Muslim and the second wife of Nanabhai Bhatt.
Nanabhai Bhatt’s first wife Hemlata Bhatt was his stepmother. He has 4 brothers – Mukesh Bhatt (filmmaker; son of Nanabhai Bhatt and Shirin Mohammed Ali), Dhawal Bhatt (editor; son of Nanabhai Bhatt and Hemlata Bhatt), Robin Bhatt (writer; son of Nanabhai Bhatt and Hemlata Bhatt), and Parmesh Bhatt and four sisters; Three of them are- Mamta (daughter of Nanabhai Bhatt and Hemlata Bhatt), Sheela Darshan, Heena Suri.
He married Kiran Bhatt (also known as Lorraine Bright) in 1970 but later parted ways.
They both have two children; One son’s name is Rahul Bhatt (fitness trainer and actor) and one daughter’s name is Pooja Bhatt (actress and filmmaker). He was once in a relationship with actress, model and interior designer Parveen Babi. He married Soni Razdan (British actress and film director) for the second time in 1986.
The couple has two daughters named Shaheen Bhatt (writer/director) and Alia Bhatt (actress).

Mahesh Bhatt started his career by making product advertisements. Through acquaintances he was introduced to director Raj Khosla and later started assisting Raj Khosla. He made his debut as a film director in 1974 with the film “Manjilein Aur Bhi Hain”.
In 1984, he directed “Naam”, his first commercial film.
He made many films like Janam (1985), Saransh (1984), Aashiqui (1990), Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi (1991), Sir (1993), Zakhm (1998) and Sadak (1991). His last film as a director was “Kartoos (1999)”, after which he became a full-time screenwriter.
He made his comeback as a director with the film “Sadak 2 (2020)”. She made her television debut in 1995 with the TV show “Swabhiman”, which aired on DD National.
As a screenwriter
His first film as a screenwriter was “Arth (1982)”.
After retiring from his directing career, he wrote the script for “Sangharsh (1999)”. He wrote scripts for several Bollywood films such as Dushman (1998), Raaz (2002), Murder (2004), Gangster (2006), Woh Lamhe (2006), and Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2015).

He made his debut as a film producer with the film “Papa Kehte Hain (1996)” opposite Amit Khanna.
He produces films under the banner “Vishesh Films”, which is co-owned by his brother Mukesh Bhatt. The company was named after Mukesh’s son Vishesh Bhatt, who is a producer.

She made her acting debut in 2018 with the film “The Dark Side of Life: Mumbai City”.

controversies
- He was embroiled in controversy when he appeared on the cover page of Filmfare magazine, in which he was kissing his elder daughter Pooja. He even said that if Pooja was not his daughter, he would have married her.
- Rangoli Chandel once claimed that Mahesh Bhatt had thrown a ‘chappal’ at Kangana Ranaut during the screening of Woh Lamhe (2007) because she refused to sign one of his films. To this Mahesh Bhatt replied,
She (Kangana) is a child. He started his journey with us. Just because her relative (Rangoli is also Kangana’s spokesperson and manager) is attacking me, I will not comment.
- In Karan Johar’s chat show, ‘Koffee with Karan’, when Mahesh was asked to rank actors according to their acting skills, he ranked Aamir Khan last. Interestingly, when Lagaan went to the Oscars he commented,
Lobbying for the Oscar award in this way was like shouting in front of a white person.
- After Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide on 14 June 2020, Mahesh Bhatt started being trolled on social media for calling Sushant schizophrenic. According to an article published on National Herald by Suhrita Sengupta, a close associate of writer and filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt once said about Sushant Singh that –

The article further states that it was Mahesh Bhatt who advised Sushant’s alleged girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty to distance herself from him due to his deteriorating mental health condition. Suhrita Sengupta further wrote-
He had no choice. Bhatt Saheb told her that she could not do anything. If she stays there she will lose her sanity also. Rhea waited for Sushant’s sister to come to Mumbai and take charge. Sushant’s sisters tried their best to support and console him. But he was beyond listening to anyone. He won’t take his medicine.”

The next day his father came to him and told him that his name meant ‘Lord of Gods’. In an interview, Mahesh told that in childhood he did not like his name because it was the name of the God who had beheaded his own son.
- During his childhood days, ‘Ganesh’ was his favorite deity and he also wanted him to be named ‘Ganesh’. He even used to sleep with a small Ganesha under his pillow.
- Mahesh Bhatt met Lorraine Bright (Kiran Bhatt) during his school days. When he was 20, they fell in love and got married.
- When Mahesh Bhatt started dating Parveen Babi, the two separated. Mahesh Bhatt left his family and Bhatt left his family and went into a live-in relationship with Praveen.
- Praveen was reportedly diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia (auditory hallucinations and paranoid delusions; believing that everyone wants to harm you).
