Luke Fickell began his career at DeSales High School. He was a standout member of the Ohio State Buckeyes’ defensive unit in 1992. As a nose guard, he made a school-record 50 consecutive starts from 1993-1996.
Later, after graduating in 1997 from Ohio State, he played as an undrafted free agent along with the New Orleans Saints of the NFL. After that, he joined the NFL and Ohio State coaching staffs in 1990 as a graduate assistant.
He was later hired at the University of Akron in 2000 as a defensive coach. Then, after working for 2 years, he returned to Ohio State as a team coordinator. He was awarded the title of co-defensive coordinator in 2005.
He was subsequently named AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010. He was also hired as the 39th head coach of the University of Cincinnati on December 10, 2016.
