News Lucy Martin

Lucy Martin, the BBC’s first paralyzed weather host, was born without a forearm and right hand. She joined a BBC program in 2015, which gives people with disabilities interested in the weather and the environment the opportunity to learn more about the profession. After the three-day program, Lucy had the opportunity to begin training to become a weather forecaster.

Lucy was interviewed by Emma Purcell, one of our regular writers, to learn more about how she got the job, the ups and downs of giving presentations, and how her disability affected her. How to her professional and personal life.

I followed my peers in everything they did and never felt it held me back. I participate a lot in dance and drama, as well as cycling and swimming. In kindergarten, I used to cut other kids’ food and tie their shoelaces because maybe I was a bit too skilled.

My family just wants me to move forward, not back down. I believe this has greatly influenced my outlook on life. We are also part of the nonprofit Reach, which helps children with upper limb deformities. It’s been great to connect with so many other children with similar interests thanks to the charity.

I installed a portable prosthetic hand in elementary school. I had to make an appointment to learn how to use it before I could bring it home. When I get home, I bring it to school and show the whole school what I’ve done. However, the next day, I decided not to wear it to school anymore because it was too heavy and I thought I didn’t need it.

There’s more to a weather report than eye-catching. This session is really demanding. There are several different sessions that include storytelling and voice training. I had a meeting with a mentor to get advice on how to get through the day and learn more about work. In addition, I had the opportunity to communicate with the makeup artist and practice presentations in the studio.
