News about Lindsey Halligan

John Rowley, James Trusty and Lindsey Halligan, an attorney for former President Donald Trump, met with special counsel Jack Smith and federal prosecutors at the Justice Department at 10 a.m. Monday, according to two people familiar with the situation.

During the investigation of the document, Trump’s lawyers are meeting with the Justice Department’s special counsel.

The meeting with the top federal law enforcement agency comes weeks after Trump’s lawyers requested it. After less than two hours in the Chief Justice’s building, the former president’s legal team declined to comment on their conversation on the way home.

CBS News cameras saw Trump’s legal team enter the Justice Department. The former president’s attorneys said nothing as they entered the Washington, DC facility. Attorney General Merrick Garland is said to have been absent from the meeting between the three attorneys and the department, according to a person familiar with the matter.

According to two people familiar with the investigation, Trump’s legal team was unhappy with the way Justice Department officials had handled attorney-client cases recently and was likely to raise those issues during Monday’s meeting, especially as prosecutors discussed related issues before a grand jury.

A federal judge ruled earlier this year that Trump’s lawyers must appear before a grand jury in Washington, DC to investigate the former president’s withholding of classified documents.

Previously, attorney Evan Corcoran declined to speak to investigators about his conversations with Trump, citing confidentiality issues between the attorney and client. A source previously told CBS News last week that prosecutors in the special counsel’s office wanted to question Corcoran about the alleged call he allegedly had with Trump on June 24, 2022, around the time investigators were trying to gather documents at Trump’s home and security videos at Mar-a-Lago.

The office of special counsel asked DC Circuit Chief Justice Beryl Howell to dismiss Corcoran’s confidentiality statements and force him to testify against Trump on the grounds that conversations between the two sides’ attorneys may have facilitated the offence. According to the sources, Howell’s secrecy order only partially approved that request and ordered that Corcoran’s testimony be subject to so-called “criminal fraud exceptions” for certain investigations.

The Court of Appeal upheld Howell’s decision and rejected the former president’s request to drop Corcoran’s testimony. Judge James Boasberg, who ruled earlier this year that former Vice President Mike Pence must appear before a grand jury in another special counsel investigation, has replaced Howell as chief justice in DC federal court.
