Lily Allen says having children ‘totally ruined’ her music career

Lily Allen opens up about being a mother and offers a raw perspective on motherhood. She explained that having children affected her career.

“My children ruined my career,” he said in the Radio Times Podcast. “I mean, I love them and they complete me, but in terms of, you know, pop stardom, it completely ruined it.”

Allen has two children with her ex-husband Sam Cooper. She is the mother of her daughters Ethel, 12, and Marnie, 11. Allen and Cooper divorced in 2018. She is currently married to Strange things star David Harbor.

“It really bothers me when people say you can have it all because, frankly, you can’t,” she explained.

Allen said he wanted to focus on his children, so he has no regrets in that regard. Allen wanted to avoid the mistakes his parents made.

She said: “Some people choose their careers over their children’s, and that’s their prerogative. But, you know, my parents were pretty absent when I was growing up, and I feel like that really left some ugly scars that I’m not willing to, you know, repeat on mine. So I chose to step back and focus on them, and I’m glad I did because I think they’re pretty well-rounded people.”

In fact, according to Allen, having children may have saved her life in many ways. She said having her children made her reevaluate her life.

She said: “I lost my sense of self. I lost my identity: I was being a bad mother. I was being bad at my job. I would wake up on a tour bus in the middle of Wisconsin and I was really hungover. I cheated on my husband. All he wanted to do was be with my children. “I wasn’t even making money.” However, Allen eventually decided to improve.

She told The Guardian: “I’m surprised I’m not dead. The music industry was a hedonistic place in the ’90s. People who indulge usually don’t get away with it. Having children generated responsibilities.”
