When prosecutors allege that she shot Gannon, she claims to have been impersonating Maria. Stauch stated that Maria is her “protector” in a different interview she gave in June 2022 and that she can communicate with Maria. Additionally, she asserted that Maria is fluent in Spanish and Russian despite the fact that Stauch is not.
Stauch asserted that Gannon’s body had no stab wounds and that the autopsy’s finding that he had been stabbed 18 times was “wrong” during a consultation with a psychotherapist.
During the course of the trial, the prosecution has emphasised that Stauch has provided multiple accounts of what transpired to Gannon, including that he vanished while travelling to a friend’s house, that he was taken from the Stauch home after an assault, and that he was taken by a man from whom Stauch was attempting to purchase a bicycle.
