New details have emerged regarding Lee Sun-Kyun’s death. The actor reportedly begged police not to make public his connection to a drug investigation.
In the days before his death, police reportedly investigated whether the actor had used illegal drugs. The investigation into Sun-Kyun was part of a broader crackdown by South Korean police, according to TMZ.
In the country, drug use carries strict consequences of up to five years in prison, according to NPR. Police had been investigating Sun-Kyun since October for drug use. He then appeared for the first time for interrogation, which acquired great publicity in the country.
Sun-Kyun’s lawyers asked the police to deny media access to their final round of questions, which they refused. Sun-Kyun’s reputation suffered due to the allegations, although his drug test came back negative, according to the Incheon police station.
The police last questioned Sun-Kyun for 19 hours on December 23, just under a week before his death.
Sun-Kyun went missing earlier this week and her manager filed a report with the police. Authorities later found the actor dead in his car in Seoul on Wednesday. Sun-Kyun was 48 years old and recently experienced international recognition thanks to Parasite.

Sun-Kyun is suspected of committing suicide. The actor reportedly left a suicide note at his house. Authorities found a charcoal briquette in the passenger seat and believed he may have died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Before his death, Sun-Kyun had hoped that any future interrogations would have been conducted in private. The lawyer talked about the negative impact it had on Sun-Kyun. Incheon Metropolitan Police Chief Kim Hui-jung felt remorse for the actor’s death but has no regrets about the way the department conducted its investigation.
Additionally, Sun-Kyun filed criminal charges against two other people for blackmailing him for $270,000. According to Sun-Kyun, the two tricked the actor into taking various drugs and attempted to blackmail him as a result.
The police questioned Sun-Kyun and as a result, the two suspects were arrested. Before his death, Sun-Kyun requested a lie detector test to clarify the matter. More details will come to light as police continue to investigate Sun-Kyun’s death.
