New details have emerged regarding Lee Sun-Kyun’s death. The actor reportedly begged police not to make public his connection to a drug investigation.

In the days before his death, police reportedly investigated whether the actor had used illegal drugs. The investigation into Sun-Kyun was part of a broader crackdown by South Korean police, according to TMZ.

In the country, drug use carries strict consequences of up to five years in prison, according to NPR. Police had been investigating Sun-Kyun since October for drug use. He then appeared for the first time for interrogation, which acquired great publicity in the country.

Additionally, Sun-Kyun filed criminal charges against two other people for blackmailing him for $270,000. According to Sun-Kyun, the two tricked the actor into taking various drugs and attempted to blackmail him as a result.
