American discus thrower Laulauga Tausaga-Collins was born on May 22, 1998, in Hawaii. Her personal best throw of 69.49 meters won her the gold medal in the 2023 World Athletics Championships. She also won the gold at the NACAC Championships in 2022.
Tausaga qualified for the women’s discus final at the 2019 World Championships and won silver medals in the discus at the 2019 match and 2019 NACAC U-23 Championships. Tausaga won the discus competition at the 2017 Pan American U20 Athletics Championships.
Tausaga won the shot put championships for the CIF San Diego Section while representing Mount Miguel High School in 2014 and 2015, respectively, with throws of 13.53 m (44 ft 4+12 in) and 14.71 m (48 ft 3 in). At the 2015 CIF California State Meet, she placed third in the 14.61 m (47 feet 11 inches) shot put competition.

On Tuesday, Laulauga Tausaga shocked the world by shattering her personal best by throwing over four meters to win the discus gold just as Valarie Allman of the USA team appeared to be coasting to victory.
Tausaga, who finished last in the previous two world finals, had a best throw of 65.46 meters, but with her fifth throw, she was able to reach 69.49 meters. Then she dashed into the crowd to join her admirers in celebrating.
Tausaga stated, “I couldn’t do something tonight that I didn’t think was feasible. Tausaga remarked, “I don’t know if I have a fairy godmother or my ancestors had some input.”
“I was confident that if I was at the top of my game, I could sneak into a medal position and not finish 12th as I did in the last two world championships,” the competitor stated. It’s still hard for me to believe that I earned a gold medal. I knew how far apart we were, but I just couldn’t get to my coach fast enough to offer him the largest embrace of my life.
Olympic champion Allman was anxious to avoid what happened the year before, when she was the clear favorite but finished third behind China’s Feng Bin. Allman had the top six throws of the year, with the best one going over three meters farther than anybody else.
In contrast to Eugene, Allman proved her superiority in Budapest with a first-round throw of 68.57, which was farther than any of her rivals had managed all year. She had improved her scores to 68.79 in the third round and 69.23 in the fourth before her teammate intervened, and she seemed to be headed for the gold.
Hawaii native Tausaga set a personal best time of 65.56, but it wasn’t all that significant because it kept her in sixth place at the halfway point.
Allman missed her final chance to recover the lead after Tausaga’s final throw, allowing her native countrywoman to take the winning throw, which she made while wiping tears from her cheeks.
I still can’t believe it, therefore I can’t tell you what it means right now, Tausaga said. I struggle to articulate my feelings. It’s amazing. Allman apologized and also voiced her dissatisfaction in her comrade.
