Lars Ulrich describes his band as “no man”, adding that they will not allow his music to be used in movies or TV shows. However, he went on to claim that the band members had changed their attitude and wondered:
“Why do we keep these songs as if they were so important, like a royal jewel or something?”
Among other things, the drummer talked about a sequence in Stranger Things that used Metallica’s hit song, Master of Puppets.
“We started saying yes to everything,” Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said of the band’s decision to share their music with the world.
In an interview with Howard Stern, Lars Ulrich said that the band has always been reluctant to allow filmmakers to use Metallica’s music in their films and plays. However, Ulrich said the band decided to change its stance on the issue a few years ago. He declared:
“Let’s share our music with the rest of the world.” So a few years ago we started saying yes to everything.”
During the interview, Lars Ulrich also mentioned that the creators of Stranger Things planned to include a moment featuring the band’s hit song, Master of Puppets, which the band approved. He continued:
“Then he came in the summer and it was amazing to watch him become a phenomenon.” And we’re very pleased, because who would have thought that these songs could have such an impact even after 40 years? So we are happy to be a part of it.”
The legendary drummer told Howard Stern that actor Joseph Quinn, who plays Eddie Munson on the show, was “happy to share that musical moment with him”, alluding to a scene on the show where Quinn’s character performs the song. In the interview, Lars Ulrich also said that the band wanted to encourage “other creative entities” including independent artists.
