US Senator Ed Markey rebuked Elon Musk when a journalist opened a verified account in his name, despite the new CEO’s strict anti-impersonation process. The 76-year-old senator from Massachusetts took to Twitter on November 12, 2022 to post a lengthy message to Musk. In the letter, he describes how a Washington Post writer created a verified fake account impersonating the senator. He also asked “how did it happen and how to avoid it happening again.”
Musk addressed this in his reply to the tweet, saying:
“Perhaps because your real account sounds like a parody?”
Twitter’s new CEO also mocked the senator’s profile picture on the microblogging site.

Senator Ed Markey was born on July 11, 1946 and has been a member of the Democratic Party since the early 1970s. A native of Malden, Massachusetts, he grew up in a Roman Catholic family and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. from Boston University in 1968. What did the Washington Post reporter do?
A Washington Post writer set up a fake Twitter account named “@readEdMarkey,” according to Markey’s lengthy letter. According to the first, the reporter created the profile using “a spare iPhone, a credit card, and a bit of imagination”. The fake profile even had a blue tick under Markey’s name after he deposited a small amount, despite the fact that he already had two accounts.
Markey also wrote in the letter:
“It looks like anyone could pay $8 and impersonate someone on your platform due to Twitter’s inadequate verification standards and clear desire to make money.” Selling the truth is risky and completely unacceptable.”
The letter comes just days after Twitter’s newly appointed CEO introduced a monthly membership fee of $8 for account verification. Elon Musk has yet to respond to Ed Markey’s statements about Twitter’s privacy as of this writing.
