Singer-songwriter Lamont Dozier has died at the age of 81. His son Lamont Dozier Jr. confirmed the news on Instagram by posting a photo of herself with her father. The inscription reads:
“Rest in Heaven, Dad!!!”
Dozier’s cause of death has not been confirmed. His funeral arrangements are also unavailable at this time.
A little bit about the life and career of Lamont Dozier
Lamont Herbert Dozier, born June 16, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan, is best known as the co-writer and producer of 14 songs that reached the top of the US Billboard charts. Along with Brian and Eddie Holland, he is a member of the singer-songwriter and producer duo Holland-Dozier-Holland. They have written, arranged and produced songs for Martha and the Vandellas, The Supremas, Four Tips and other musicians. Dozier is the choreographer and producer, while Brian and Eddie are responsible for producing the lyrics and vocals.
Lamont founded and operates Invictus Records and Hot Wax Records. He has written and produced hit songs for bands like Freda Payne, 100 Proof Aged for Soul, Chairmens of Board and others. Dozier began by releasing several singles for Detroit-based companies before joining Holland-Dozier-Holland as composer and producer for Motown Records in 1962. In 1963, they had a string of hit singles with Martha and The Vandellas.
Lamont left Holland-Dozier-Holland in 1973 and went on to record several solo albums. In 1974, his biggest success was Trying to Keep My Woman. He also wrote and performed the theme song for the sitcom That’s My Mama. Along with the LP, Lamont has released singles such as Cool Me Out and Shout About It.
Dozier was a famous composer in the 1980s who wrote the song Two Hearts for the movie Buster. The song was nominated for an Oscar and won a Grammy. He also composed music for Alison Moyet and Men and Women.
He wrote the music for the 1987 spy thriller Leonard Part 6. Without You, one of the songs reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and was also adapted into Portuguese and Spanish. In 1990, Lamont and Holland Brothers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
