She said: “I get a lot of DMs and posts about why I was left out of the press as the original Celie in @TheColorPurple (musical). I’m excited about the success of the movie! Happy for everyone involved. However, I do want to receive my royalties for the lyrics I added to ‘I’M HERE’. 💜”

In an interview with TimeLaChanze says the musical’s composers asked her to describe how she felt while playing Celie.

“I said, ‘I want to flirt with someone, I know I have my sister.’ She can’t be with me. But she is still my sister and I know she loves me and my children. I didn’t put it together like they did, but they put into the song my feelings, my emotions, and my thoughts about what I was experiencing as the actor who plays Celie. That’s why I like to say I helped write the song,” she said.

The film exceeded expectations on its opening day and went to number one at the box office!
