KV Vishwanathan, also known as Kalpathi Venkataraman Vishwanathan, was born on Thursday, 26 May 1966 (age 57 years; as in 2023) in Kalpathi, Palakkad, Kerala. His zodiac sign is Gemini. Coming from a family of lawyers, Vishwanathan decided to pursue a career in law when he was in college. He joined Coimbatore Law College, Bharathiar University (1st batch), Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, to pursue a five-year integrated law degree. During his college days, Vishwanathan practiced as a legal trainee in the chambers of advocate KA Ramachandran, a criminal trial lawyer in Coimbatore. He joined the Bar Council of India in 1988.

KV Vishwanathan took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court on 19 May 2023, after the warrant of appointment was issued by the office of President Draupadi Murmu, becoming the tenth lawyer to be appointed to the Supreme Court bench directly from the bar.
