KV Vishwanathan, also known as Kalpathi Venkataraman Vishwanathan, was born on Thursday, 26 May 1966 (age 57 years; as in 2023) in Kalpathi, Palakkad, Kerala. His zodiac sign is Gemini. Coming from a family of lawyers, Vishwanathan decided to pursue a career in law when he was in college. He joined Coimbatore Law College, Bharathiar University (1st batch), Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, to pursue a five-year integrated law degree. During his college days, Vishwanathan practiced as a legal trainee in the chambers of advocate KA Ramachandran, a criminal trial lawyer in Coimbatore. He joined the Bar Council of India in 1988.

After enrollment in the Bar Council of India in 1988, Vishwanathan shifted to New Delhi and started practicing in the chambers of senior lawyer CS Vaidyanathan, who later served as Additional Solicitor General of India. He practiced under Vaidyanathan for about two years and later joined the chambers of senior advocate KK Venugopal (who became the Attorney General of India), where he practiced law for the next five years. After nearly two decades of practice, Vishwanathan was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India in April 2009. On 16 May 2023, a resolution was passed by the Supreme Court Collegium, comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, and Justices SK Kaul, KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi and Sanjiv Khanna, which confirmed the appointment of KV Vishwanathan as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. recommended. KV Vishwanathan took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court on 19 May 2023, after the warrant of appointment was issued by the office of President Draupadi Murmu, becoming the tenth lawyer to be appointed to the Supreme Court bench directly from the bar. The other nine are Justices SM Sikri, SC Roy, Kuldeep Singh, Santosh Hegde, Rohinton Fali Nariman, UU Lalit, L Nageswara Rao, Indu Malhotra and PS Narasimha.
