Katie Porter’s religious affiliation is Anglican/Episcopal. Porter graduated from Yale and Harvard Law schools and has taught law at numerous universities, including the University of California, Irvine, the William S. Boyd School of Law, and the University of Iowa. She is the vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has received media attention for her testy questioning at the hearings.
Porter served as a law clerk to Judge Richard S. Arnold of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in Little Rock, Arkansas. Katie Porter was born on January 3, 1974 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She grew up on a farm in southern Iowa. Her father, Dan Porter, was a farmer who later became a banker. Liz, her mother, was instrumental in establishing Fons & Porter’s love of quilting. Porter attended Yale University after graduating from Phillips Academy, where she majored in American Studies and graduated in 1996.
Her undergraduate thesis was entitled The Effects of Corporate Agriculture on Rural Communities. She was a member of Yale’s Grace Hopper College. Porter also served as an intern for Chuck Grassley during this period. Porter then attended Harvard Law School, where she was a member of the Board of Student Advisors and Notes Editor of the Harvard Women’s Law Journal. She has become a household name among liberal Democrats on social media and announced Tuesday that she will run for Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat in 2024. Ms. Porter, 49, is the first named challenger. Ms. Feinstein declined to serve as Senate president pro tem last year after receiving harsh criticism during Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearing before the Supreme Court. Earlier this year, she also resigned as the leading Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
