Karl Wallinger, a musician best known as the frontman of the band World Party and his time with the Waterboys, has died at the age of 66.
Wallinger passed away on Sunday, March 10. Although his publicist announced his death, he did not reveal the actual cause of his death.
Karl Wallinger notably joined the Waterboys in 1983. He played on the band’s live tour and contributed to the group’s second album, A pagan place. However, due to creative differences with Waterboys founder Mike Scott, Wallinger ended up leaving the group in 1985.
He then founded the World Party. He Mail Through that group, Wallinger was able to create a font influenced by the Beatles, as well as Bob Dylan, Sly Stone, and Van Morrison.
The group was very successful and even helped Sinead O’Connor with her debut in 1988, The Lion and the Cobra. She appeared on World Party’s first album and was a guest on the group’s second LP.
World Party continued until 2015. After their 2015 North American tour, the bandmates broke up.
Karl Wallinger is survived by his wife Suzie Zamit, son Louis Wallinger, daughter Nancy Zamit and two grandchildren.
Peter Gabriel is among those who paid tribute to Karl Wallinger
Shortly after Karl Wallinger’s death was announced, many fans and collaborators took to social media to pay tribute to the late musician.
Among those published was Peter Gabriel. “Shocked and saddened to learn that we no longer have Karl Wallinger with us,” Gabriel shared on X (formerly Twitter). “I admired his work from afar, but it was when we did Real World Recording Week together that I had the most creative and fun week I’ve ever had in the studio.”
“Karl was packed with wonderful musical ideas that blew us all away, all delivered with terrible jokes that had us laughing uncontrollably all day and all night. He was such a talented and natural writer and player that he was a faucet that he could turn on at will, effortlessly.”

Gabriel continued writing about the personality of Karl Wallinger. “Like many great comedians and many great musicians, melancholy was strong in the mix, but his charm, humility, intelligence and sharp wit made him great company.”
“Karl had abundant talent and this extraordinary man has given us extraordinary music and memories.”
Despite his past, Mike Scott also aware a tribute to Karl Wallinger. “Stay well, my old friend. “You are one of the best musicians I have ever met,” he wrote.
