Kangol Kid was an American songwriter, breakdancer, hip-hop producer, and master of ceremonies. He was famous for being a member of the American old school hip hop group UTFO (Untouchable Force Organization), based in Brooklyn, New York City.

While he was in school, he followed his passion for dancing and along with his dance partner Doctor Ice, they began performing as breakdancers in stage shows and formed a duo named “The Keystone Dancers”. After this both of them worked as dancers for the American hip-hop group ‘Whodini’. Kangol and Doctor Ice then formed their own hip hop group ‘UTFO’ (Untouchable Force Organization; ‘formerly UFO’). In 1984, music label Select Records signed UTFO and released their first single, “Roxanne Roxanne”. At that time the Congo had no legal representative.
One of UTFO’s most popular albums was released in 1987 titled ‘Lethal’. UTFO’s debut single gained immense popularity and was voted Best Rap Song at the 1988 Urban Music Awards. UTFO then performed in various stage shows and live events. The group became the first rap group to perform at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, New York City, New York.
Kangol also worked as a music producer and lyricist. He composed and wrote the single “Private Property” in 1985. In the same year, he managed and worked as a producer for the American rap group ‘Whistle’. Kangol left UTFO in 1989.

He was invited as a guest lecturer in various schools and colleges. Kangol composed the music for an independent film ‘Nightmare’ and he won the Best Movie Score award for the film. He also worked as a voice-over artist and was a columnist for magazines such as Black Beat Magazine and AllHiphop.com. He worked as a voice-over artist for various TV commercials and jingles. He used to write a column under the name Yo Kangol.

On December 18, 2021, he lost his long battle with colon cancer and at the time of his death at around 3 am, he was hospitalized in Manhasset, New York. In his last Instagram post he wrote,
I came out of the recovery room…and this man welcomed me. Maybe you have heard about him??? 😭😭 Ladies and gentlemen, the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Goat himself LLCOOL J @llcoolj @rockthebells visited me and enhanced my healing energy in a way that doctors could never duplicate. Thanks baby brother. I love you.”
Facts/General Knowledge
- In the early 1980s, his friends called him The Congolese Kid because he wore a Congolese hat. His signature hat is included in the collection of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.
- In an interview, Kangol said that he was proficient in language arts, and that he was an ebony scholar.
- He followed a non-vegetarian diet.
- He was honored by the American Cancer Society in 2012 for his social services towards cancer patients (as co-founder of the Mama Luke Foundation). She organized various fundraising events to help cancer patients, especially those suffering from breast cancer.
