On Tuesday, January 17, the El Paso Police Department announced the death of Sheriff Greg Allen, who served the department for nearly four decades. Allen, El Paso’s first African-American sheriff, has died at the age of 71 and his departure has been mourned by the entire city, including the mayor. Although the cause of death has not been released, El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser said Allen is in the hospital recovering from (undisclosed) medical treatment. Allen was appointed El Paso’s first African-American sheriff in March 2008, three decades after he joined the El Paso Police Department and patrolled Central and West.

The entire city mourned the passing of El Paso Sheriff Greg Allen, who was highly respected in the department, shortly after the city announced his death. El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser, who praised Allen for his courage and dedication, said:
“We lost a great leader today. El Paso Sheriff Greg Allen was not only a great cop but a great son, husband, father and friend. All officers. Everyone in his unit respected him and I’m happy to call him a friend. He will miss him dearly, and El Paso will forever be grateful for his leadership.”
The mayor expressed his sincere condolences to Alen’s family, noting that not only his loved ones but the entire community will feel this loss. Allen, who joined the department in 1978, rose through the ranks of patrol officer, training specialist, sergeant and lieutenant before being appointed sheriff in 2008. According to media sources, El Paso was named the “safest big city” in the United States of America for four consecutive years during his tenure as head of state. El Paso announced the death of the chief and stated:
“The City of El Paso mourns the passing of longtime Sheriff Greg Allen. Sheriff Allen joined the El Paso Police Department in 1978 and was appointed Sheriff in March 2008. The patrol will end on January 17, 2023.

El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles, who described Allen as a close friend, offered his condolences and said:
“I could go on and on about Greg’s accomplishments and accolades, but what I will miss most about him are our long phone conversations when we were able to vent to each other.”
After the announcement of Allen’s death, law enforcement officials gathered for a funeral, following the deceased officer from Providence Hospital’s East Facility to Sunset Funeral Home in the Lower Valley.
