During his appearance in tonight’s show This week, Jude explained to host Jimmy Fallon that director David Lowery encouraged him to stay in character, even when he wasn’t filming, in front of his young co-stars.
“David Lowery had the idea of trying to encourage them not to see me when I wasn’t Hook,” he shared. “So I stayed as Hook the whole time, which was an opportunity to be really scary and bad.”
Jude adds that “it sounds a bit horrible. He didn’t want to talk to a 6-year-old and suddenly say, ‘Okay.’ You hate me. I’m Hook. I’m Hook.’ So instead, I stayed as Hook. And yes, a lot of the reactions you see in the film are reactions to me for the first time, or to the man himself.”
At the end of filming, that’s when he became himself again and it wasn’t just Hook.
“They finally met Jude,” he says. “And I did what every adult should do to bribe children. I rented an ice cream van, drove it to the location and delivered ice cream. Nothing like chocolate ice cream to convince a child that you are fine.”
Peter Pan and Wendy is now available and streaming on Disney+. If you haven’t seen it, watch the trailer!
