Letting his anger get the best of him, John Mellencamp walked off stage after cursing and yelling at fans during his show in Toledo, Ohio on Sunday, April 14.
The heated exchange between Mellencamp and some audience members began when he was sharing a story about his grandmother when an interlocutor tried to silence him by yelling that he should “play some music.” The crowd booed and Mellencamp seemed quite unhappy with the comment.
“What do you think I’ve been doing to you?” [expletive]”stated John Mellencamp. Refusing to let the comment go and continue with the show, he said: “Here’s the thing, man, you don’t know me. you do not [expletive] know me.”
Mellencamp then addressed the rest of the audience, telling them to “find this guy and let me see him after the show.”

After another fan-turned-critic loudly demanded he play the Song of authority, John Mellencamp ended the hearing. “I’ll tell you what I’m going to do,” Mellencamp said. “Since you’ve been so wonderful, I’m going to cut about 10 songs from the show.”
He then started teasing his hit song. Jack and Diana, but he quickly stopped. “You know what? The show’s over.”
He Toledo Leaf reported that John Mellencamp ended up returning to the stage about five minutes later. He sang a couple more songs, including Rain on the scarecrow, Lonely night and Pink houses.
He had also allegedly told another heckled audience member that they “should go back to kindergarten.”

After the Ohio show, John Mellencamp spoke with the Washington Post about how he approaches his shows as he gets older. Although he did not specifically mention the Toledo show, he claimed that the inappropriate behavior at his shows hit him “sideways.”
“I expect etiquette within the theater,” he explained. “The same way you would in a Broadway show. My shows aren’t really concerts anymore. “They are performances and there is a difference between a performance and a concert.”
John Mellencamp noted that it is no longer “for everyone.” “I’m just not. And if you want to come scream and get drunk, don’t come to my show.”
In other words: Don’t expect Mellencamp’s shows to be like other concerts, and be prepared for more performances with narration instead of just him playing his songs.
Mellencamp is currently on tour until early fall. He is expected to return to Ohio for a show in September at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls.
