Career
In 1978, Mackey and his wife, Renee Lawson (Hardy), help set up their first wellness grocer, SaferWay, in Austin. They met while living in a vegetarian hostel. They dropped out of high school.
They received $10,000 and raised another $35,000 to start SaferWay. Austin had several healthy food stores at the time. The two ran a market on the first floor, a wellness cafe on the second, and for a short time lived on the third floor of their building. They merged SaferWay with Clarksville Natural Grocery, run by Mark Skiles and Craig Weller, and renamed the company Whole Foods Market in less than two years. Each of the four (Mackey, Hardy-Lawson, Skiles and Weller) are considered business partners.
Mackey merged Whole Foods into a global corporation, with locations in major markets across the country, including Canada and the United Kingdom. Along the way, he acquired smaller competitors. Whole Foods has acquired major competitor Wild Oats Markets, Inc. in 2007.
Mackey serves on the boards of several charities, including Students for Freedom, the Global Animal Society, Conscious Capitalism, and the Humane Society of the United States.
On December 24, 2009, Mackey stepped down as CEO of Whole Foods Market, a position he had held since 1978.
