John Hunter was a British surgeon who defended the application of the scientific method in medicine. John Hunter was one of the most distinguished scientists and surgeons of his time. In addition, he was a teacher and collaborator of Edward Jenner, the pioneer of the smallpox vaccine.
Early life
John Hunter was born on February 13, 1728 in Scotland. Personality was the youngest of her ten children. Three of his brothers, one of whom was also named John, died of illness before he was born. His older brother’s name is William Hunter and he was an anatomist. In the beginning he showed little talent and helped his brother-in-law as a cabinet maker.
Death

Career
John Hunter learned anatomy by helping his brother William with dissections at William’s anatomy school in central London. In the early 1760s, he served as an army surgeon, worked with dentist James Spence performing tooth transplants, and later established his school of anatomy in London.
Likewise, John composed a collection of living animals whose skeletons and other organs he prepared as anatomical specimens, demonstrating the anatomy of humans and other vertebrates, including more than 3,000 animals.
His brother became an admired professor of anatomy and John worked as his assistant in dissections and began his own practical classes. His brother and his brother’s former guardian, William Smellie, were responsible for the deaths of many women; whose corpses were used for their studies on pregnancy. Additionally, Hunter is alleged to have been involved in these deaths.
However, people who studied life in Georgian London agreed that the number of pregnant women who died in London was not particularly high for that locality and time. In 1774, John provided case histories of at least four of the subjects.

He also studied with William Cheselden at Chelsea Hospital and Percival Pott at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. He also studied with a famous anatomist and wax modeler, Marie Marguerite Biron. And John became assistant surgeon at St. George’s Hospital in 1756 and surgeon in 1968.
Similarly, in 1760, he was appointed army surgeon and was staff surgeon on an expedition to the French island of Belle Ile. Later, in 1763, he left the army and spent more than four years working in partnership with a London dentist, James Spence.

In 1764, he started his school of anatomy in London and began private surgical practice. Likewise, he bought a house near the Earl’s Court district of London in 1765. His house had a large plot of land and he collected animals such as zebras, Asiatic buffaloes, ibexes and jackals. He used to reduce the skeletons of some of these animals as part of his research on animal anatomy.
In 1767, John was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Likewise, the character was considered the highest authority on venereal diseases and he believed that syphilis and gonorrhea were caused by a single pathogen. At that time he advocated the treatment of gonorrhea and syphilis with mercury and cauterization.
Similarly, he was appointed surgeon at St. George’s Hospital in 1768. After that, John became a member of the Company of Surgeons. and was appointed surgeon to King George III in 1776.
Personal life
John Hunter married the poet Anne Home, daughter of Robert Boyne Home and sister of Sir Everard Home. They married in 1771 and had four children. His two children died before the age of five.
One of his sons is buried in Kirkheaton Cemetery, Northumberland, and the headstone is listed Frade II. And her fourth child, Agnes Hunter, married General Sir James Cambell of Inverneill.
